OpenAI’s DevDay 2026 has highlighted a major shift toward more capable and autonomous AI systems, with the company unveiling GPT-6.1 Sol alongside new developer tools and agent capabilities. The event took place in San Francisco on September 29.
GPT-6.1 Sol is positioned as a lower-cost alternative for complex coding, computer-use and professional workloads, with OpenAI describing its performance as close to the company’s more powerful GPT-6 Astra. Its standard API pricing is $2 per million input tokens and $10 per million output tokens.
OpenAI also expanded its Agents API, allowing developers to build agents that can run code, edit files, use tools and continue work across multiple steps. Computer-use capabilities allow agents to operate software through a hosted browser environment.
Another major development is Codex Cloud, which allows coding agents to continue working remotely even after a user closes their laptop. Together, these releases signal OpenAI’s growing focus on AI that can perform tasks rather than simply generate answers.
